Grace Wang for Frisco ISD Board of Trustees
In the past few years Frisco Independent School District has experienced some tremendous growth and with it comes substantial growing pains. I decided to run for a position on the Frisco School Board because I am concerned as a parent that our district has at least a 30 million fund shortfall and needs a creative solution to solve it. We need to continue to draw and keep quality teachers; we need to go deeper into our community to involve parents in running the schools; and we need to build relationships with other entities of the government and businesses for collaboration. With my 20 years of business experience and proven track record of problem-solving skills, I believe I can represent our community’s voice and hand in the Frisco Independent School District Board of Trustees.

Who is Grace?
I was born in China and emigrated to the U.S. with my family more than 20 years ago. I obtained Bachelor of Science in Accounting at UTD with Summa Cum Laude and Master of Science in Information Technology and Management two years later. I started my professional career in the telecom industry as a Network Cost Analyst; then worked briefly as a CPA for Nortel after gaining certification for Public Accountancy. After my daughter was born, I was given an opportunity to work from home as an analyst again. My primary responsibility is to efficiently gain insight into large quantities of data for my clients, turn the knowledge into software licenses that enable the clients to save network cost, and optimize network efficiency. I was recognized as a Principal by her company in 2009, as well as Employee of the Year in 2011 for ACE (Attitude, Competence, and Excellence). I’m not only an expert on Telecom Network Cost but also the go-to person when it comes to client relationships. I have cultivated strong analytical skills, as well as negotiation, project management and leadership skills as a Solution Architect, which is a vastly diverse and multidimensional role.
I’m happily married to Tim and the proud mom of two great kids, Brandon and Natasha. The family resides in Plano, with one child as a young professional and the other is enrolled in the Frisco school district.
I’m a believer in the Christian faith and a member of Dallas Chinese Bible Church. I have served as a Sunday school Teacher, Awana Small Group Leader, Youth Group Leader, Choir Member, Small Group Leader in Bible Study Fellowship, PTA and Band Booster volunteer. A significant portion of my free time has been devoted in serving others in Church and the community.

Why am I campaigning for this position?
First of all, it is a citizen’s responsibility to serve his/her country in whichever position he/she is called to. JFK once said: “And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” The beauty of a democratic system is that your participation, opinion, and voice do make a difference.
Secondly, as a Christian, I’m also called to be the salt and light in this world. From his earliest days as a public speaker to his final days in the public eye, Ronald Reagan consistently praised America as “a shining city on the hill,” a phrase from the Bible. We are called to be the light so we can point people to the light; we are called to be salt because we ought to enrich others’ lives. Devoting myself to public services is an excellent way to demonstrate my faith.
Lastly, as a parent, I want to model a good citizenship and a good Christian behavior for my children. I want to show them through action that freedom that we all enjoy comes with sacrifices as well. I want to show them that our love for our country requires actions from us, and sometimes it means to step out to participate in public policy making and governing.

What are some challenges and possible solutions?
Frisco is one of those fastest-growing school districts in North Texas. The district currently has 56,000 students in 9 high schools, 16 middle schools, 40 elementary schools and 3 special programs schools. FISD is known for the “small-school” strategy which the district has committed to despite shrinking state funds. The FISD has decided to delay the opening of four new schools - Memorial High School, Lawler Middle School, and Talley and Liscano Elementary Schools, to make up $15 million of a $30 million state funding shortfall in the 2017-2018 budget. The challenge of the “small-school” model is that it requires a lot of building and program uniformity, and higher manpower cost due to increased number of administration staff like principles.
Frisco ISD Board of Trustees has defined its goals as:
·        Support high levels of learning for all students
·        Support “FISD by Design” academic and operational strategic plan goals and outcomes
·        Support FISD community engagement efforts through active participation and dialogue
·        Lead, support, and guide fiscal responsibility and outcomes for FISD
·        Continue advocacy effort and involvement in leadership development/training
·        Seek Opportunities for connections with all adjacent governmental entities
If I’m elected, I will be committed to working alongside the other board members to achieve these goals. I will use my problem-solving skills to help the district to find creative solutions to the fund shortfall. I will work hard to ensure district spending priorities in hiring and keeping quality teachers, building cost-effective schools, and striving for efficiency with available funds.
